Mayor Rothschild, Supervisor Elías, and Community Leaders Speak Out Against Efforts to Roll Back America’s Clean Car Standards June 24, 2019

(TUCSON, AZ) — On Tuesday, June 25 at 2:00 PM PT, Tucson Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Pima County Board Supervisor Richard Elías will join public health professionals for a press conference to oppose the proposed rollback of America’s clean car standards by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler and U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator (NHTSA) Deputy Administrator Heidi King.

With the transportation sector serving as the largest source of carbon pollution in the country, the clean car standards are considered the most effective policy on the books to fight climate change. Extreme heat waves made more intense and frequent by climate change increase air pollution and threaten the health and well-being of communities in Tucson and across Arizona. In Arizona, nearly 200,000 Arizonans are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat, and there are over 131,000 children and over 533,000 adults who suffer from asthma. The clean car standards help improve air quality for families across the state.

Speakers will also call on Arizona Senators Martha McSally and Kyrsten Sinema, as well as Representative Ann Kirkpatrick (AZ-02), to oppose the rollback of the clean car standards, which have enjoyed broad, bipartisan support. As extreme heat and air pollution impact Arizona communities this summer, Arizona’s leaders must oppose the rollback of these successful, life-saving EPA and NHTSA standards.
