Contact your Reps and ask them to support H.R. 5845, the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2020 March 11, 2020

Call or e-mail your Reps to break free from plastic! We are stronger together!

Widespread use and irresponsible disposal of plastic have taken a toll on our environment and our health. Plastics dangling from plants and trees, consumed by wildlife, and nearly everyone has plastic in their bodies. The same qualities we associate with plastic products, specifically their durability and cost to produce, are now the qualities that make them such a problem. Our oceans and landfills are now polluted with an increasingly dangerous amount of plastic waste, and recycling programs alone will not get us out of this problem. While cities across the country have acted on this growing problem, our state has actively hindered cities from addressing this issue. Bisbee, AZ, for example, initiated an ordinance to ban plastic shopping bags and levy a small fee for recyclable bags but was blocked by Arizona’s Attorney General from implementing it.

One bill that has been introduced to tackle this issue is H.R. 5845, the Break Free from Plastic Pollution Act of 2020. Introduced by Senator Tom Udall and Representative Alan Lowenthal, this bill would, among other things, immediately enact new bans on single-use plastics, ban the creation of new plastic facilities, and enact national recycling targets. Congresswoman Kirkpatrick will be monitoring this bill as it makes its way through Congress and will certainly keep your thoughts in mind if it comes to a vote before the full House.

Arizonans understand the importance of protecting our environment better than just about anybody. From limiting the effects of mining to keeping our limited water resources clean and potable, we know that failing to care for the environment can have severe consequences. PSRAZ has received confirmation that she will continue to vote and advocate for environmental protection, and will keep your perspective in mind.

Be sure to let them know you are a resident of their district, and please be brief and respectful.
